Welcome interpreters!

The Board Directors and staff of the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (National Board), welcome all of you who are interested in becoming a Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI).  Medical interpreters do very important work and it is an honor to serve you as your certifying entity. We also appreciate all the stakeholders who help make certification a success.

The National Board has accomplished a lot. We have expanded to a total of six languages - Spanish, Russian, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and Vietnamese - that are offered for our oral exam, our registrations have tripled, we have welcomed several new very talented Board Directors who will be helping to lead in advancing the certification program, we have expanded access and the demand for certification is skyrocketing! Some states and health care entities are now requiring certification, recognizing its importance.

Now that all of the six languages are available, the National Board takes this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who helped in the development and piloting of the exams - hundreds of interpreters took the pilot exams and others hosted the exam and served as proctors. There were many who contributed to this effort to advance access to certification in more languages. Your contribution is greatly appreciated! The National Board is grateful to the foresight and support of the Office of Equity and Inclusion, Oregon Health Authority, for funding the program for development of medical interpreter certification exams in five additional languages.

This year we have surpassed the milestone of 1,000 Certified Medical Interpreters (CMIs) and we will have new credentials offered, move to online proctoring so an interpreter can take the exam in a secure way on a home computer, we will have a new and improved website, we are projecting adding more languages and we will go international.

If you would like to volunteer to help with the work of the National Board, please email us at info [at] certifiedmedicalinterpreters [dot] org

Thanks for all you do to advance the profession,
