Welcome Interpreters!

Medical interpreters do very important work, and it is an honor to serve as your preferred certifying entity.  Once a candidate passes the credentialing exams from The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (National Board), they are bestowed the CMI Credential (Certified Medical Interpreter). CMIs demonstrate a level of professionalism, industry knowledge, and interpreting skills that is recognized and valued by Health Care Systems, industry service providers, and peer medical interpreters alike.

The careful vetting process and high standards held by the National Board are just some of the reasons employers and care providers prefer working with CMIs--knowing they will be compliant with regulatory guidelines, provide complete and accurate interpretation, and promote patient safety.

We currently offer the CMI credential in: Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Korean, and Vietnamese.

In our quest to make certification ever more accessible, we now offer online proctoring, which enables both the written and oral exams to be taken from any location, including the convenience of your own home.

Join the CMI family! After you submit your application and prerequisites, you will be assigned a Program Advisor to help you navigate your way through the program. Your Program Advisor, and all of the staff of the National Board, are dedicated to helping you succeed and achieve certification. We invite you to take the first step toward the many benefits of being certified -- register for the CMI program today!

Who We Are

The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters is a nationally recognized certifying body that offers the Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) credential to medical interpreters. The CMI credential is the most prestigious credential offered in the industry.

The National Board has expanded to a total of six languages - Spanish, Russian, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, and Vietnamese.  We have recently welcomed several new talented Board Directors who will be helping to lead in advancing the certification program.  Demand for certification is skyrocketing, with some states and health care entities now requiring certification.
